Blackpool set for £10m boost

Yesterday the Big Lottery Fund announced that Blackpool would receive £50,000 to submit a business plan on how they will improve services for people with multiple and complex needs.

The Blackpool partnership is led by Addaction and if successful the town could be on track for £10m of funding to support people with multiple problems including homelessness, mental health, addiction and reoffending.

Alan Hopley, Director of Fundraising, Marketing and Communications, at Addaction, said: "There are many people in Blackpool that have a whole range of different needs. Many of them don't receive the help they need as their problems are so complex. This blights their lives which can also impact on the community they live in. This is a fantastic opportunity to work collectively across all organisations on more comprehensive solutions to tackle the ingrained problems that these people face."

Amongst the other partners are The Ashley Foundation, Renaissance at Drugline, Richmond Fellowship, Homeless Forum, Blackpool Coastal Housing and Blackpool Council.

For more information visit the Big Lottery Fund website.

Budget brings good news for Social Enterprise

Social enterprise leaders in Blackpool have welcomed the recent budget announcement of a new tax relief to encourage private investment in social enterprise.

It is believed that the tax relief will complement the government's other recent measures to help social enterprises access the funds they need, such as the launch of Big Society Capital, using money from dormant bank accounts.

The government is now consulting on the details of the tax relief and a working mechanism will be drawn up by summer 2013 with the measures introduced in the finance bill in 2014. George Osborne announced at the budget that "social enterprises play an important role in growing the economy, reforming public services and promoting social justice."

Tony Carr, of Social Enterprise Solutions, based at Blackpool's Enterprise Centre on Lytham Road, said: "We welcome any incentives for private investors to work with social enterprise and therefore broaden the social investment market, as traditional sources of finance continue to dwindle in the economic downturn."

"The treasury has taken notice of the social enterprise sector and I hope that Blackpool can have an input into how the tax incentives could being introduced."

Leading Edge Masterclass

Managing Change in the Voluntary Sector

The sector is undergoing fundamental changes. Changes that have the potential to affect every aspect of the work we do. How we manage change will determine whether we can continue to thrive and get support to those who need it. This Leading Edge Masterclass will look at key questions such as:
  • What are some of our biggest challenges?
  • What steps can we usefully take to meet them?
  • How can we view a shifting environment to see opportunities as well as the threats?
During the Masterclass you will consider current  issues and practical steps that your organisation can take to improve both their resilience and their effectiveness. There will also be the opportunity for participants to network and share learning with each other.

Partially funded through 'One Lancashire', this practical Masterclass provides the perfect opportunity for you to discuss and explore ways to effectively 'Manage Change' in your organisation.

For delegates working in voluntary and community organisations based in the One Lancashire region, the cost to attend this Masterclass is £22.50. For delegates working in organisations outside the One Lancashire region, the cost to attend is £40.00.

The Masterclass is delivered by Alex Swallow,  Chief Executive of the Small Charities Coalition/Charity Trustee Networks and founder of Y oung Charity Trustees. Alex currently s its on the working group for the Dame Mary Marsh Review into Skills and Leadership and on the ACEVO  Governance Commission.

Volunteering in Health & Care

The King's Fund has published a new report into Volunteering in Health & Care.

This report considers the role and value of volunteers in health and social care. It looks at the important part that volunteers play in improving patient experience, addressing health inequalities, and building a closer relationship between services and communities.

It also outlines the changing nature of volunteering, why this can cause tensions, and why volunteering does not always reach its full potential. Examples of good practice in the NHS and voluntary sector illustrate how these barriers can be overcome.

Crowdfunding Support for Young People

ncompass are seeking your support for the Butterfly and Phoenix Projects.

The Phoenix and Butterfly Projects (the first for young men and the latter for young women) offer a range of effective support to help young people understand and express the emotions linked to their self-harming and explore different ways to cope and reduce feelings of loneliness in order for them to start feeling better and looking towards a brighter future free from self-harm.

Referrals are increasing at an alarming rate and because of limited resources demand significantly outweighs our capacity.

The self-harm service is looking to the future and launching a Crowdfunding Campaign to raise £10,000 over 3 months (beginning March). The money raised from the campaign will allow us to support more young people to be free from self-harm.
  • £5,000 will enable us to support 60 young people
  • £7,500 will enable us to support 90 young people
  • £10,000 will enable us to support 120 young people
To pledge your support or for more information click here or contact Dominique Napier / Helen Rowlings on 01253 362140.
